Is My California Auto Insurance Still Good If Not Registered?

Paid the registration but because of an electrical problem that nobody can figure out, the car won’t pass smog. Is my auto insurance still good if it has been paid?

  1. Debra B, I recommend you find a nearby auto insurance agent to help. Since I live in Delaware I can’t suggest an agent in California, but here is an online resource that can help you. http://www.goodinternetdeals.com/Auto-Insurance.html

  3. Yes, your insurance is not affected by the registration status.
I would recommend paying your registration on time, even before your car passes smog. By doing this, the DMV won’t charge you penalties for being late. You won’t get your tags until the car passes smog though.
If you fail smog over and over your vehicle may be eligible for the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) vehicle retirement program. Call 800-952-5210
You can get a temporary operating permit to allow more time to obtain a smog certificate. It will cost $50 and are only allowed if the vehicle has been tested at a smog station and failed. The extension can be for no more than 60 days from the date registration is due.
Voluntary Accelerated Vehicle Retirement Program (VAVR) If you would like further information (916) 445-8811. It provides monetary or other incentives to vehicle owners to voluntarily retire their older, more polluting vehicle
