My Mom Is 61 Yrs Old Does Not Have Insurance And Just Found Out She Needs A Hip Replacement. Need Advice.?

The doctor told her the surgery would cost approximately $30,000. My mom is a widow, is retired from heavy highway construction after 22 years, she is cannot work right now due to poor health. (she was working part-time with her brothers who are in the commercial fishing industry on Lake Michigan, but working on the boat at her age and health is too much, so now she doesn’t even have that income). Are there any options for her to get help for this surgery. She is not old enough for Medicare or Medicaid (not sure which it is, sorry). I’m trying to get educated here so I can find her some help. She’s in a lot of pain. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated or where we could go for help. And I don’t think she’s old enough for social security yet.

  1. If she cannot work, she should consider applying for disability. Those on SS disability are eligible for medicare even though they aren’t 65 yrs old. Also have your mom get advice on ways to cope with the hip arthritis. There are many coping skills and things she can do to make life at least marginally bearable while she waits on surgery. Some hospitals have classes for people with arthritis and she might benefit. Also she might benefit from a regimen of physical therapist-prescribed exercises and the use of walking aid such as a cane or crutch or even a wheelchair. There are also medicines that she can take that might help relieve pain. Her doctor can advise on this.
I’ve had both of my hips replaced and can attest to the high probability of success of the surgery. It has literally changed my life and I hope your mom can benefit from the surgery as well. It is considered elective surgery because it isn’t usually done on an emergency basis and can be planned for.
Things you can do: help her see about applying for SS Disability. While she waits on the outcome of that application (it can require appeals and takes lots of time), find her an arthritis support group (check with her doctor and at local hospitals). If she doesn’t already take pain meds, have her ask her doctor for recommendations. I took Aleve at double the OTC dose upon my Dr’s recommendation and it helped me for several years. There are other possible meds to take. Next, get her a cane and have her physical therapist or doctor teach her how to use it properly. It might be worth it for her to pay for a consult with a physical therapist who could design a program of exercises that would keep the muscles around her hip strong.
I know how hip arthritis can drag a person down. I lived with gradually worsening arthritis in both of my hips for about 10 years until they were so bad that I couldn’t even walk without a cane. My world got smaller and smaller.
Best of luck to you both.

  3. I don’t live in the US so can’t help you regarding health care, sorry :( But in view of the US surgery being too expensive for your Mum, is there any way your Mum could afford to go overseas to get it done much cheaper… Egypt for instance. This could be an option but you would have to find a reputable surgeon who has experience in this area. You could ask in the Egypt section of Travel to get an idea if this is feasible and about the costs and if anyone knows any reputable surgeon.
In the meantime whilst you are weighing up options, get your Mum to take bromelain capsules. These will help with the pain and any inflammation and swelling. Read this article for more info:http://www.thehealthierlife.co.uk/articl…
Best wishes and I hope your Mum gets her surgery soon.

  5. If she cannot work she should apply for social security disability. Eventually she will be eligible for medicare if she gets disability but this could take two years or so. The other option is to seek treatment in India where they can do this surgery for a fraction of the cost here.
