Motorcycle Insurance Requirements

So you are the proud new owner of a motorcycle. You bought your new helmet, gloves and even a saddlebag for your new hog. The last thing you need to do is make sure you have motorcycle insurance. Motorcycle insurance is important for many reasons however the most important fact you should know is that all states will require you to have certain coverage’s on your motorcycle through your insurance company.

Requirements on exactly what coverage’s you will need, you can check with your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). They will list the requirements you are required to have by law, (usually on their website) to avoid any penalties by not having the required insurance for the state you live in. For example you could be fined up to a minimum of $500 dollars, have four points taken off your motorcycle license and even have your motorcycle license suspended if caught riding with no motorcycle insurance. The best way you can get motorcycle insurance is to check with the company in which you have your home and auto insurance with. As most know you get discounts for having multiple policies through your insurance company. There is one catch however; there are many companies out there that will not offer insurance for a motorcycle.

Now even though you will be required to get insurance for your motorcycle there are some ways you can manipulate your policy to get you some discounts or at least not have to pay as much monthly. The best trick is to manipulate your deductible requirement for your motorcycle insurance. This is the case where you will be required to pay up to the deductible amount in the event you do happen to be involved with an accident.

In 2008, there were 5,290 motorcycle fatalities. That number jumped 14% higher than that of 2007. If you do end up in an accident you can find yourself with some costly repair and in most cases medical bills. Keep yourself covered; you just never know when an accident can happen on your motorcycle. You are the only one who will know your own needs and exactly which is the right coverage for you, discuss this with your motorcycle insurance agent.

If you do have an accident history you can expect higher rates, and if you can’t get a motorcycle policy through your current provider you can always check here direct motorcycle insurance to get the cheapest motorcycle insurance possible.

Be safe out there, and keep riding.
